Baseball - America's Pastime

Baseball programs are offered in many schools, and youth leagues are also popular. Softball, a direct derivative of baseball, is also popular, especially among young women. The Minor Leagues are ultimately a "farming" ground for grooming young players who will later be brought up to play for Major League Baseball clubs. Ball players in the major leagues make millions of dollars playing the game and regularly go on to coach or own their own teams after retirement.

For over a century, families have spent their afternoons together at the ballpark, cheering for their home teams and eating hot dogs and drinking soda. It's been a beloved family event as far back as anything can remember. In fact, in the contemporary era of television and radio, many regularly scheduled programs show reruns during the World Series so they do not compete with the popularity of the games.

Baseball

Though small has threatened the love of the game in the past, the up-to-date steroid scandal has cast a shadow over Major League Baseball and divided its fans. Hopefully, the issue will blow over, and this fine American tradition will continue to bring people together for years to come. Despite it losing its luster as the most watched sport in the United States.

Baseball, Softball Games For 12 citizen Or Less

I regularly don't play baseball or softball too much. However, last weekend, a friend invited me to the park to hit some softballs. I was highly bored, so I speedily agreed.

As a kid I was never in fact into the sport of baseball. I opinion that the game was too slow and boring. I was more in to basketball or football, where the ball is enthralling speedily and there is constantly something going on. Other thing about baseball that I never liked is that it takes so many population to play a good game. If you are playing basketball in the playground you can do just fine with 4 population or even 2. Backyard football can be played just fine with 3 or more population as well. But coming up with 18 population to play a game of baseball is just way too much. Well, last weekend I learned a couple of games that can be played with 12 population or less.

Baseball

A great way to play with 12 population is that you split up in to 4 teams of 3 people. 1 team is up to bat and the other teams share the field. You play 2 outs instead of three, since your batting team is so small. Also, if all of your players on are base then you have to take an out to send up a batter.

Another game that you can play if you have less than 12 population is that you split in to 2 teams. One team is up to bat. The batting team doesn't run the bases since there are not sufficient players to field. Instead you just use ghost runners. The fielding team will cover only the left side of the field. If the batter hits the ball in the infield and the fielders cover it without errors, it is an out. If the infielders make an error, it is a single. If the batter hits a ground ball that makes it to shallow outfield, it is a single. If the outfielder makes error fielding the ball, it is a double. Lastly, if the ball makes it to deep outfield, it is a double. If the deep outfielder errors, then it is a triple.

I in fact don't know what these versions of the game are called, but they were pretty fun to play. On a warm spring day, it sure was fun to be covering and hitting some softballs, even though it isn't one of my favorite sports to play. Either way, it was great to be with friends and also to make new friend on the field. I look forward to playing some more and maybe one day, I will enjoy and appreciate the "All-American" sport a itsybitsy more than I do now.

Two Edinburgh teenagers have been detained for at least thirteen years for murdering their childhood friend. Declan Robertson and Andrew Parfinowski were just sixteen years old when they attacked Brett Lodge with a baseball bat after a drunken argument last summer. The First Minister has told MSPs that changing the system for approving new drugs for NHS patients would be "unwise". In other news, an inquiry into the West Coast railway franchise fiasco has found 'serious problems' and 'unacceptable flaws'. The bidding process was investigated after the Government awarded the contract to First Group. And finally in sport, Lithuanian striker Arturas Remkivicius claims he'll be signing for Hearts in January. He had a trial at the club seven years ago but now says he's moving with his family to Edinburgh and joining up at Tynecastle.

Baseball - Top Seven Injuries That Will Plague Most Baseball Players

Baseball injuries commonly do not end a player's career. However, any injury can be a setback. With allowable care and knowledge beforehand, the player will know what to look for, and will return to general activities in a shorter amount of time.

The top seven baseball injuries that will plague most baseball players are described below.

Baseball

1. Shoulder Injury

Throwing or hitting a baseball utilizes the entire physical body. A shoulder injury is commonly associated with an arm and shoulder injury of the pitching or throwing arm and shoulder. In healing terminology, a baseball player's tasteless shoulder injury is a torn Rotator Cuff. Pitchers are most prone to suffer from this injury, but whatever who plays baseball can come to be afflicted with a shoulder injury.

2. Sprained Wrist

A sprained wrist injury demands extra attention so that the swelling and pain can subside. A sprained wrist injury rarely lasts for more than a few days since the wrist is so flexible and pliable. Should a player take a tumble or have to chase a fast dropping line drive hit, he could genuinely suffer from a sprained wrist.

Sometimes when a player is running for a base, he'll slide into the base and sprain his wrist. It hurts and it will swell, but most likely, the wrist will not get broken. Within a few days after cold compresses have been applied, and the wrist is later soaked in warm water, the wrist will be fine, and the baseball player will be ready to participate in his next game.

3. Dislocated or Broken Fingers

When a baseball player's glove webbing is improperly aligned at the occasion when a ball impacts the glove, the player's fingers and hands will sting. However, most players will tell you that catching a ball with an ungloved hand can feel like being shot with a high-powered arrow.

Whenever a finger is exposed at any angle other than in an open and flexed state, the player will feel his finger joints getting crunched, dislocated, or broken. Catchers and infielders are the most tasteless players to receive such finger injuries, but it can happen to any player, regardless of the position they're playing.

4. Hyper-extended Knee

When a baseball player grabs a fly ball out of the air, he is most genuinely prone to suffering from a hyper-extended knee injury.

Whenever a player's foot lands awkwardly after he has lunged for a fly ball, the knee joint takes the bulk of the landing. Although he may show the other players that he can walk off the immediate hurt, his knee joint will be sore for days.

When that same player pays attention to his knee's soreness, he will recover quickly. However, if the player aggravates the injury by playing some more innings, or another game within a day or two, the injury will worsen and the pain will reappear.

Another way that a player can hyper-extend his knee is when his spikes get jammed into a base that's fixed into place. The knee joint could twist in the wrong direction, thereby causing the knee to hyper extend.

5. Pulled Hamstring

Even the most in-shape and toned baseball player who appears to have strong muscled legs can be prone to suffering from a pulled hamstring when he's running at break-neck speed to catch a ball or run a base.

Mickey Mantle's entire vocation and Albert Pujols's existing vocation have been fraught with hamstring muscle pull question injuries. The injuries are painful, and the player will most likely need to take some time off to heal, but his vocation will not be ended due to a pulled hamstring.

6. Sore Elbow

Whenever a baseball player throws a ball hard to one of his teammates, he becomes susceptible to a sore elbow injury the same day or the next day. Sore elbows heal fairly rapidly, so there's no need for healing attention, except to remember to reduce the velocity that a player throws the ball the next time he's out on the field. A sore elbow is caused when the player suddenly stops or slows down the fling. That action is known to cause stress at the elbow's bone joint.

7. Bruises on Legs and Hips

When a baseball player does not wear sliding pads, he is quite vulnerable to receiving big bruises and strawberries on his legs and hips from sliding into a base. The painful part comes when a well-meaning attendant tries to apply any medication that contains alcohol or witch hazel in it. You'll be sure to hear the player's screams from many fields away.

Bruises will change colors and are genuinely sensitive to the touch, but they're not the most serious injury a player can receive. So, try to remain tough when you look in the mirror after the game and see raw fleshy spots. Within four or five days, the tenderness will be gone, and most likely the color of the bruise will have faded away.

Losers Keepers: Fantasy Baseball Players to consider Dropping for 2012

With the fantasy baseball playoffs looming and the end of the 2011 baseball season in sight, as a fantasy owner you will no doubt be looking to make some roster decisions in regard to the players you will consider retention and those which you will release. When deciding who qualifies as a fantasy baseball keeper for 2012 and who doesn't, you might want to start thinking about potentially dropping some players that were previously determined to be no-brainer fantasy baseball keepers.

Perhaps because of age, injuries, a convert in teams/leagues or just normal ineffectiveness, there are a few players that you may consider throwing back instead of using up a fantasy baseball keeper spot. As recently as the beginning of the 2011 season, these names may have been sure fire keepers but for one reckon or another, their stock has dropped. As a result, using a keeper spot on the following players represents a degree of risk:

Baseball

Adam Dunn (Chw) -
We've seen players drop off significantly in the past (Dale Murphy, anyone?). However, Dunn has undergone a perfect collapse of epic proportions. Entering the 2011 season as one of the games most consistent sluggers, you always knew what you were going to get from Dunn. In his first at bat for the White Sox, Dunn hit a 2-run homer. In his next at bat, he doubled in 2 more runs. It looked to be enterprise as usual for Dunn. Then the 2011 season wore on and Dunn fell apart. He currently is sitting on 11 Hr with an incredible.163 Avg. Sure, there's the opportunity he figures things out in the offseason but why take the risk?

Carl Crawford (Bos) -
Who wasn't salivating at the possibility of Crawford hitting in the Red Sox line up while playing half of his games at Fenway Park? Crawford had produced at an outstanding rate with the Rays and all signs pointed to him reaching an additional one level in Boston: hitting in a potent line up (possibly in the 3rd spot), banging doubles off the Green Monster and playing for a perennial contender. However, once the games started, Crawford disappointed fantasy owners and Red Sox fans alike. Until he starts to show the enticing power-speed blend which made him an elite fantasy outfielder, don't bother.

Josh Johnson (Fla) -
When Johnson pitches, he is outstanding. In 2010, he led the Nl in Era and Hr rate. However, he missed all of September last season with back and shoulder problems and the injury bug struck again this year, only much earlier. Pitchers with such leading shoulder issues early in their careers are not exactly the cornerstones you want to build your fantasy roster around. Don't be tempted by Johnson's talents, as he has managed only one 30-start season in his big league career. Let an additional one fantasy owner deal with the discontentment of losing him for large amounts of time in 2012, because it is very likely to happen.

Ubaldo Jimenez (Cle) -
Wow, talk about a fall from grace. At the All-Star break last season, Jimenez was touted as a sure-fire Cy Young winner. Then he came back to earth (4.34 Era, 1.30 Whip in the second half of 2010). In 2011, his free fall has continued, only much more precipitously. A trade to the Al hasn't helped, as he has been worse in Cleveland than he was at Coors Field. A drop in velocity and command are never good signs for a pitcher determined by many to be top-ten material entering 2011. Take a pass on using up a keeper spot on him.

Joe Mauer (Min) -
The Al Mvp in 2009 and consensus #1 fantasy catcher entering 2011 has seen his stock plummet. Mauer's injuries have frustrated fantasy owners all year but the issue is worse than a few nagging neck issues. Mauer's 28 Hr in 2009 are looking like a vocation anomaly as he has displayed a perfect lack of power in other seasons. In addition, Twins boss Ron Gardenhire has been using him at first base, possibly in an exertion to sacrifice the wear and tear which catching can have on a player. That makes Mauer a high average, low power first baseman. In other words, he's Billy Butler who is not keeper material either.

Jose Reyes (Nym) -
Even at a position as shallow as shortstop, Reyes is a risky keeper. He hasn't been able to stay salutary since 2008, he's not stealing at the same rate as he did from 2005 - 2007 and his power numbers are down. Don't let that high midpoint this season tempt you too much, as his Babip in 2011 is 37 points higher than his vocation mark and is sure to regress to the mean in 2012. All signs point to continued regression and keeper spots are just too valuable to waste. Take a pass.

Heath Bell (Sd) -
There is always the consider about either it is wise to use a keeper spot on a closer, but it absolutely makes a lot of sense if you have one that displays consistency from year to year. Of all closers not named Mariano Rivera, Bell was the mark of consistency out of the bullpen from 2009 - 2010. However, his hereafter is up in the air as he has stated he would like to return to the Padres but may have to rule for a job as a set-up man for a bigger market club, greatly devaluing his fantasy worth. In addition, his K/9 rate has dropped off alarmingly, going from 11.06 last season all the way down to 6.79 in 2011. He may very well return to his former levels but it plainly isn't worth the gamble.

Taking risks has always been an integral part of fantasy baseball. However, remember that risks are best saved for the later rounds in your draft, not to be used on your keeper spots. Choosing wisely when it comes to your keepers will help you originate a solid foundation upon which to build your fantasy baseball team. You'll thank yourself come draft day 2012.

Baseball - America's estimate One Sports Pastime?

What is America's whole one sports past time? Can I still say baseball? You could make that statement 30 years ago and beyond that point but things have changed. Baseball of procedure has the richest history of all sports. When baseball fans get into talking baseball history they are verily talking "history". I mean when names are thrown out like Ty Cobb, Christy Mathews, Honus Wagner and Babe Ruth you are talking some major history. You can go back to the turn of the century right into the year 1900. Things have changed a bit. Has basketball turned into Americas #1 pastime? Can Football be Americas #1 pastime? With the emergence and popularity of basketball and football, there can now be an seminar on which sport is Americas #1 pastime.

Basketball verily took a turn in the 1980's as Magic Johnson and Larry Bird took the Nba to other level. Of procedure basketball was already popular and had past stars such as Jerry West or Dr. J but the real breakthrough came in the 1980's and from there it verily took off with Michael Jordan into the 90's. Basketball has even come to be very global now as many Nba stars come out of other countries. There was a time when the original "Dream Team" of Nba stars competed in the Olympics and faced no competition. Today, they good be ready because there is so much talent in these other countries that it is stiff competition. Like basketball, football has all the time been a popular of many sports fans but its popularity has grown widely. It's remarkable the ratings that Super Bowl Sunday brings. They have even talked about development Super Bowl Sunday a national holiday. Though baseball is still a popular sport, many have traded in their classic baseballs for a big orange ball and an oddly shaped brown ball.

Baseball

In the year 2050 basketball and football will have history like baseballs rich history and maybe soccer will be development an exertion to be Americas sport. Don't laugh! O.K., go ahead and laugh. They have been trying for years; it's not going to happen. Soccer of procedure is the worlds #1 sport, but will it ever catch on in America? I don't ever see it happening. So what is America's #1 sports pastime? You have to make the call on that one but to me baseball will all the time be Americas #1 pastime. Rich in history and many memories for folks of all ages. If you have any comments on this field or want more sporting news doesn't hesitate to check out our website.

Here's Some Baseball Thoughts And Quotes For Youth Baseball Coaches And Players

Here are baseball thoughts and some quotes that I understanding all you youth baseball coaches would appreciate. There are far too many hot dog players and coaches in youth baseball today. I believe we must honor the game baseball by example. Most of it is just common sense and courtesy. I'm not giving you any incommunicable recipe to success. Let's behave like mature adults and remember we don't have a team full of future professional baseball players even though others may think otherwise.

Everyone on the team must be willing to trade sweat, effort, and reduce for success. When looking at yourself as a player, the critical. There are too many egotists among players today. Egotism is the anesthetic which deadens the pain of stupidity.

Electronic Baseball Scorebook - The Tech-Savvy and favorable Scorebook

Recording and holding track of your team's statistics are now made easy thanks to the electronic baseball scorebook. This also lets you description your team placement, the quality of play while tournaments, and the history of each of your players. This type of scorebook is useful for both managers and coaches of baseball teams because it helps keep their records and statistics more organized.

Why go electronic?

History of Baseball Bats

The history of baseball bats dates back to 1800s. While this period, baseball was in its infancy, and players made their own bats from wood, without any exact shape or size; players experimented with long, short, flat, and heavy bats, and they finally built a bat with a round barrel.

In 1859, the first rule was made concerning the size of the baseball bat. The rule prescribed the allowable width of the bat, 2.5 inches in diameter, but no length was prescribed. In 1869, other rule was made to restrict the length of the bat to 42 inches (the same maximum length allowed today). Even though there was no rule concerning the shape of the bats, most of the players used bats with flat surfaces. Baseball underwent some developments While the succeeding years. In 1890, a committee made a rule concerning the shape of the bat; the rule recommend the round shape of the bat and fixed the diameter to 2.75 inches at the end

Baseball

Baseball came to a new phase with the introduction of metal belts in 1970. Bats made of aluminum became an instant success, as they are lightweight, durable, and much faster than wooden bats. Although titanium bats were introduced in 1993, they were banned from expert games because of other dangers. Discrete types of aluminum baseball bats were introduced While the 1990s. Bats made of scandium aluminum are the most popular today.

A great deal of study was conducted and many resulting modifications were made by industry to heighten the trampoline consequent of the bat and to increase the size of the sweet spot (the place on the bat for hitting the ball). A double-walled bat, a new develop introduced in the 1990s, consists of an outer wall of scandium-aluminum and an inner wall of a composite material (often graphite), and a thick fluid or rubber in the middle of these two walls. Today, suitable wooden bats are made of maple, white ash, and bamboo; these bats are used in expert baseball tournaments.

The past 150 years have seen many important changes to the baseball bat, and the develop of the bat continues to evolve.

Coaching Baseball Batters - 3 coarse Baseball Swing Mistakes and Corrections

Coaching youth and high school baseball batters requires a watchful eye and close concentration to detail. Baseball coaches must recognize and spoton any flaw in batting hitting mechanics. Players should not be allowed to institution their swing over and over without correcting their mistakes. Good baseball coaches are all the time on the constant guard for any bad habits that a young player may develop. Here I discuss three of the most common hitting mechanical flaws and my coming to correcting each. Here are three common mistakes I often see at my baseball camps and when I search for youth games and youth practices.

1) Barring The Front Arm - The batter locks or stiffens the front arm as the swing begins. Many young batters will have assumed the spoton stance and launch positions but have a tendency to tighten up as the swing begins. The barring of the front arm causes the swing to loop and to be too long. The batter has great strangeness taking the bat to the ball and development experience unless the ball is thrown exactly on the swing plane. The proper swing has a "short stroke" or path to the ball. The best way to spoton barring of the front arm is to make sure that the batter keeps the front arm elbow bent or at an "L" position prior and during the swing.

Baseball

2) Stepping Out Or Pulling Off Pitches - I often see this with young kids in our summer camp program. They all the time step out or their front side often flies open before the ball arrives. This batter has great strangeness development contact. Until this flaw is corrected, the batter will only become frustrated and embarrassed. To keep the front shoulder in the proper "closed" position, teach the batter to keep the front shoulder ended and directed at the second baseman for right-handed batters and toward the shortstop for left-handed batters. The stepping out is a more difficult flaw to fix. Having the batter pick the front heel off the ground and stepping just slightly toward the plate may help. I frown on putting obstructions behind the front foot to keep it from interesting backward, although many coaches do this to stop this bad habit. I often use the "step in and hit: drill with a hit trainer, Bat operation motor or batting tee. The batter assumes a position back away from the ball target that requires the batter to step toward the ball in order to make contact. If the batter does not step toward or into the ball, the batter will not be able to hit the ball.

3) Upper Cut Swing - The upper cut swing may be caused by two things that are speedily identified Dropping the hands and back leg collapse can both cause the batter to swing upward. Make sure that the batter keeps the hands at the top of the charge zone and does not drop the hands or dip the back side shoulder during the swing. The back leg should be keep "tall or straight" to preclude back side dipping which can also cause an upper-cut swing. Two great drills that we use to stop this is the "Zone Circle" tee or soft-toss drill. We make a circle the side of our batting cage by inter-weaving a white or yellow rope in the net. The batter must hit or drive the ball off the tee or from a soft-toss into the circle. The batter must have a level swing and keep the front side in to be able to hit the zone.

Coaching Point: Make sure that the batter is not over striding. This too can cause a batter to pop up. The batter must incorporate visually on the top half or middle of the ball to make good contact.

2013 Louisville Slugger Bats and Reviews

The Louisville name is synonymous with baseball bats and in reviews it's impossible to cut off them. Unfortunately they've been fighting an uphill battle in the business to collect the top spot in the industry. The problem has been in the 100% composite class where they have failed to establish a bat that has caught on. Last year they took a step in the right direction with the Z-1000 composite. It has received much more acceptance and you'll positively see college players using it. They're hopeful it will come to be a staple in their line-up with the long running Omaha and Exogrid.

No surprise that Louisville is sticking to a one-piece stiff cope establish for their 2013 line-up. They finally got the message last year and returned to the establish that has defined and what habitancy expect from them. All bats listed below are Bbcor Certified for high school and collegiate ball or approved for play in exiguous League, Babe Ruth, Dixie, Pony, Aabc, and Usssa depending on the model/size.

    Baseball

The 2013 Tpx Exogrid 3 is back for a sixth year. It is their best-selling bat and has been vital to keeping sales moving. The establish is the same, a hybrid model with an internal carbon composite sleeve in the cope that makes it their siffest handle. The alloy barrel is made from the same Ac21 alloy from last year and the composite sleeve is made from their Ls-2X composite material. The same material as last year. The turn for 2013 is that they are now claiming it has the "lowest swing weight available" for a 2 5/8″ barrel Bbcor model. It has been promoted as a balanced bat in the past, so this is a turn they felt was important. They claim the lower swing weight is due to the "innovative new Composite Flex Band Technology." As said, this is their best-selling baseball bat and most college players, on teams swinging Louisville, chooses the Exo. A solid option for both power and singles hitters. It is ready in Adult, Senior and Youth models. The Adult model retails for 9.

The Omaha has been a staple in the Louisville line-up for over 10 years and it's back for 2013. Let me be clear in saying there is positively nothing new for the 2013 model. It is still is a one-piece model made from their older St+20 alloy with a stiff handle. But... They are also claiming it "features the bottom swing weight bat on the market." Again a turn from their balanced establish claims in the past. This begs the question, does the Exo or Omaha have the bottom swing weight? The folks at Louisville need to supply some information here or it comes over as pure hype. This bat has been a consistent player for many years and is a great option for those seeing for a 100% alloy bat. Keep in mind many players in college baseball swing the Omaha, so don't be fooled by the lower price and 100% alloy material. ready in Adult, Senior and Youth models. The Adult-3 model retails for 9.

The Catalyst was Louisville's primary 100% composite bat back in the day. It is ready for 2013 in Youth and Senior League models. It is a one-piece 100% composite bat with a stiff cope made with their older C1C composite material. They claim it's designed to supply the longest barrel and largest sweet spot on the market. The impressive highlight of the Senior League model is comes in a -12 weight drop which is far lower than other bats in this category. I'd recommend passing on the Catalyst and go with one of the newer models. There has been so much turn with composite bats over the last few years and I would avoid the older material. It is ready in Senior and Youth models. The Senior model retails for 9.

The 2013 Vertex -13 youth baseball bat has an extra long barrel for a supposed "20% longer sweet spot". It is a one-piece hybrid establish that bonds the Ls2X composite cope to the Ac21 alloy barrel. Can anything say H2! Yes this was the same establish that Louisville used on their ill-fated H2 bats. In case you forgot the bat was promoted as a two-piece bat fused together to come to be a one-piece bat. You can look at my reviews of the H2 here. Or you can just stay away from the Vertex.

There has not been any data in case, granted yet on the 2013 Z-1000 100% composite bat. We're assuming this will be a part of the line-up and just hasn't been introduced yet.

The bats can be pre-ordered now and will be on shelves in November 2012.

Baseball, A Personal and Biased Perspective

"A hotdog at the ballgame beats roast beef at the Ritz" -- Humphrey Bogart

I'm not sure just when I became a fan. In truth, I don't think anyone ever chooses to do it. I don't think anyone ever woke up on a Saturday morning and said to themselves, "Today is the day I learn something about baseball." Baseball isn't like that. Baseball, it seems to me, chooses you.

    Baseball

I know this: most of what I learned about baseball is thanks to my dad. And I conjecture that most baseball-loving population over the past 100 years would say the same thing. Baseball is like your great-grandfather's pocket watch handed down to you with care. A kind of inheritance, if you will, from your father, grandfather, uncle; often - but not all the time - a male authority figure.

Baseball fans are a unique breed. While your mean baseball fan can discuss the finer points of the game in great detail, the real love the sport engenders in the avid fan is not easy to define. If you spend any time nearby baseball, it seeps into you in a hard-to-explain way. It's a connecting thread in the linens of one's life. Somehow, game by game, inning by inning, it gets in your blood, and once you've got it there's no cure. Once de facto exposed to baseball, it will be, for now and always, a astonishing infection, deeply ingrained in your psyche. If all of this metaphor talk about baseball sounds maudlin or overly-sentimental, you are not a baseball fan. But don't worry, there's still hope for you.

My first exposure to baseball, as I mentioned, was thanks to my dad. Specifically, via the games we would go see played by Portland's minor league team, the Beavers. I suppose I was about eight or nine when I saw my first game. I don't recall the score or who the opposing team was. Maybe surprisingly, I don't even remember whether our beloved Beavers won or lost. Being so new to the game, I didn't understand strikes, balls, outs, steals, or anyone else that seemed to be happening in some odd blend of quiet, deliberate order counterbalanced by sudden, riotous chaos. There were cheers, boos, some running, some dust kicked up, some ball throwing, even some stealing (when my father said that a runner stole 2nd base, I recall pointing out the obvious: "No he didn't. It's still there.")

I didn't know any of the players, and couldn't tell the catcher from the mascot. I de facto had no idea what was going on down there on that huge green and brown expanse. I was a baseball newborn, seeing, hearing, smelling the myriad of sensory experiences unique to this bizarre game for the very first time.

I can only recall aspects of the game that de facto don't have anyone to do with sports or statistics.

I will never forget my first sight of the baseball outfield as we entered the stadium, almost blindingly green. I remember the foreign bittersweet smell of beer. I remember the loose crackle of peanut shells under foot. I remember the musky smell of sod and moistened dirt, and of course, the enchanting scent of hotdogs, and salty popcorn. There is a perfume to a baseball stadium, and it can be found nowhere else. I remember the crack of a 33 ounce bat against a five ounce leathery sphere that sounded like a gunshot echoing in the stadium while the players took batting practice before the game. Most of all, I remember the ever-present noise of the fans, like an ocean, sometimes a quiet drone, sometimes a raucous tidal wave of cheers or boos interspersed with yells of "Get your glasses on, ump!" or, "He's gonna bunt!" or, "Pull that pitcher, he's done!" None of this made any sense to me whatsoever.

Although I was a small boy, experiencing a hundred utterly alien and weird things on that day over 30 years ago, I was overcome with an unexpected feeling - not of being in an uncomfortable and unfamiliar place, but of being at home.

I know that this touch of mine isn't unique. In fact it's almost a cliche. Talk to anyone who loves the game and they will likely have a similar story to tell. But while baseball has not been my life's passion, my appreciation of the Grand Old Game has reached a point with me where I have no selection but to look a puny deeper at this odd phenomenon and observe the game in my own way.

"I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game. It will take our population out-of-doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger corporeal stoicism. Tend to ease us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set. Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us." ~Walt Whitman

In 1979, the Pittsburgh Pirates, led by Dave Parker and Willie Stargell, won the National League pennant. Anytime I hear their theme song, "We Are Family," by Sister Sledge, I can't help but envision Stargell rounding the bases in his black and yellow Pirate uniform, like some exuberant bumblebee, after one of his sublime sizable home runs.

As it happened, our local minor league team, the Portland Beavers, were the farm team for the Pirates at that time. This resulted in dad and me meeting both Stargell and Parker when they visited Portland while a Beavers exhibition game. anyone they were like in their personal lives, I remember that Stargell and Parker exhibited all the hallmarks of the gentlemanly demeanor the practice of baseball somehow seems to instill in so many of its stars. And I recall that both of them, while graciously smiling and autographing a nonstop provide of baseballs, seemed to have hands and arms of superheroes, which, in a sense, they de facto were.

"When they start the game, they don't yell, "Work ball." They say, "Play ball."' ~Willie Stargell

It was then - having met some of its legends - that I began to pay attentiveness to baseball. Although I was already a fan of basketball and football, I found myself constantly mesmerized - if not downright confused - by baseball and its intricacies. That seeming contradiction between simplicity and complexity is but one of the enigmas of the game. Baseball is, after all, unique. Let's remember a few things about baseball that, in my mind anyway, set it apart from other sports.

First, the game is set upon a field arranged in a rather unusual geometric shape. Rather than having a goal of some sort on each end of an elongated field (as most other sports) there is no such goal. No basket, no goal, no net. There is no linear movement from one endzone to the other.

While the exact dimensions and configuration of the lines and bases on the field are constant in major and minor league baseball, the fields themselves can vary in size and shape. The length from home plate to the center field fence, for example, can vary as much as 35 feet from park to park.

Second, baseball is not a game depending so much on constant action as it is on moments that can unfold in a split second fastball strike, or a singular swing that sends a ball over the fence and brings a home crowd to its feet (or leaves them cursing in despair). Once the pitcher fires the ball toward home plate - a journey that takes the ball about half a second - virtually anyone can happen. Anything.

Critics of baseball say the game lacks athleticism and hard play. This is a puny like complaining that tennis lacks enough slam dunks, or that golf doesn't involve enough tackling. But as anyone who has played or paid close attentiveness to the game can attest, there's abundance of physicality in baseball. The power it takes to smack a ball over a fence 410 feet away may only be eclipsed by the sheer superhuman exertion it takes to activate a fist-sized hardball into a space the size of a hubcap sixty feet away...at nearly 100 miles an hour...100 times a night...accurately.

Still, say critics, the game is slow, not enough action to satisfy the short attentiveness spans of the contemporary sports fan. While the annotation seems misplaced to us baseball fans, do the critics have a point? while an mean game, how much time elapses while which "something's happening?"

To get to the lowest of this question, Wall road Journal reporter David Biderman recently analyzed the amount of time spent in action while an mean major league baseball game. "Action," includes the time it takes for a pitcher to throw the ball, as well as the more confident time a ball is in the air after a hit, or a player is stealing base, etc. Biderman considered that the mean game had about 14 minutes of action in it.

However, as noted by Biderman, the time not spent in action while a game isn't exactly time wasted. between pitches, a myriad of decisions and strategic options may be weighed out. Managers may be busy consulting the hitting chart on an opposing batter before he even steps up to the plate. Catchers and pitchers are having a constant silent dialogue concerning what kind of pitch to throw and where to place that pitch, depending on a range of factors. And fielders may shift positions depending on the batter, or the game situation to growth their chances of rescue runs. While the casual observer may grow frustrated by "all the standing around," in baseball, the more complicated fan knows that this time spent between pitches is where the real game of baseball is played. In short, there is all the time "something happening" while a baseball game.

But the critics who persist in impatiently drumming their fingers on their knees and yawning over the "slow pace" of baseball may find it enchanting to learn that Biderman also considered the amount of play action while an mean pro football game. Just 11 minutes.

While it's enchanting to think these aspects of time where baseball is concerned, most aficionados know that baseball has far more to do with timing. To the novice fan, baseball looks like a sport centered on the pitcher trying to assault out the batter, and the batter trying to avoid such a fate. But to the trained eye, the battle between pitcher and hitter is one of keen decision-making and split-second timing, and it's not a easy thing to analyze. Take pitching, for example.

It would take a supercomputer to properly decree the variables in physics complicated in throwing a pitch. From the way a pitcher regulates his breath before the pitch, places his feet on the mound, and adjusts his balance, to the grip on the ball, to the wind-up (often seeing like a pained contortionist, but considered industrialized by each pitcher to maximize velocity and balance), to the publish point (the spoton occasion the ball leaves the pitcher's hand), and the amount of spin or torque applied to the ball as it is released (the arm swing measured as fast as 5,000 degrees per second!), muscles from neck to toes flexing and releasing, pitching is a excellent symphony of physiological exertion unlike anyone seen in other sports.

The speed, movement, and break of a pitch largely determines its success, so the slightest deviant motion or off-balance publish can make the inequity between a perfectly settled assault or a wild pitch. To expert all this, a good baseball pitcher is de facto more than an athlete. He's part physicist, part sleight-of-hand magician, and part gambler.

Batting is no different. A skilled hitter is a blend of laser-like focus, spring-loaded power, and gymnastic equilibrium at the plate. The position and angle of the bat before the pitch is released, as well as the stance, head angle, and knee bend, can be distinct from hitter to hitter. And then there is the swing itself. There is, as it turns out, a exact way one is supposed to swing at a pitch. Turning the upper body toward the pitcher as the ball is released, rotating the shoulders, and extending the arms only through the assault zone - not before - while following the ball with your eyes, and throwing the whole weight of your hips, arms, and shoulders into the (hopeful) contact. Got it? Good.

Of procedure not everyone hits this way and keen observers can identify some ball players merely by their unique stance at the plate. For an object episode in contrasts of batting styles among players, observe the differences between Ichiro Suzuki, Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, Kevin Youkilis, and Alex Pujols at the plate; all superior hitters, and yet all possessing radically distinct batting stances and swings.

Obviously, not everyone cares about such things as whether a hitter is "pulling the ball to left field," or how a pitcher manages to throw a ball in such a way that the trajectory de facto changes in mid-flight. As enchanting as these things are to me, I know that the mean sports fan probably doesn't spend much time reasoning about them. Of procedure many baseball fans are not "average" sports fans. They may never have held a bat in their hands, but they are students of the game and they devour puny pieces of baseball data the way mice gobble crumbs.

"Baseball statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything." ~Toby Harrah

Truthfully, the one element of baseball that was, for a time, off-putting to me is the absolute pervasive worship of The Statistic. Baseball, more than any other sport face of world economics, maybe, takes statistics very, very seriously. Some have compared the lust for baseball statistics to a drug addiction. It seems that almost nothing can happen while a game - no matter how trivial - that isn't being meticulously documented by somebody somewhere. We've all seen box scores, displaying the runs, hits, and errors, by innings for a given game. Some of us have even looked up things like "lifetime batting average," for a given player, or "best Era for a closer since 1955." But this does not scratch the face of statistical obsession with which baseball fans preoccupy themselves.

For example, were you aware that on September 5th, 2006, seven teams shut out their opponents? Or that on July 24th, 2006, the Detroit Tigers became the first team in 115 years to score 5 or more runs in the first inning of three consecutive games? Or that only two brothers ended up with the exact same batting mean in the same season (Mike and Bob Garbank, in 1944, a.261 mean for both). Still awake?

Well, let me let you in on a puny secret: you do not need to concern yourself with such trivia in order to wholly and de facto appreciate the game of baseball. But here's an even deeper secret: the more you watch baseball, the more you will come to be de facto fascinated by such seemingly meaningless facts. And you might just learn something in the process. Thanks to baseball, I learned how to conjecture a pitchers Era, a hitter's batting average, and other (gasp!) mathematical feats.

One of the most compelling aspects of baseball to me is that it's de facto a game within a game, within a game. It's like some sort of fractal image: the closer you look, the more you see. The greater your attention, the more details are revealed. To commit to becoming a student of the game means becoming a kind of archeologist who digs deeper and is rewarded with ever more enchanting information. After more than 30 years of personal appreciation and observation, I am still learning the game. From pitch selection, to situational fielding positions, to the strategy of the batting lineup based on the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing beginning pitcher, baseball is a bottomless well of fascination for anyone intrigued by variables, odds, statistics, and just plain luck.

I've rambled on about the ins and outs of baseball for some time now. But what is it about this game that de facto so grabs me as a fan?

I guess the answer to that runs deeper than hits, home runs, and hotdogs. I think the real answer is that baseball delivers something to my life I've found nowhere else: A sense of belonging. Belonging to a history, a tradition, a heritage that not only stands the test of time, but also makes time somehow irrelevant. Think about it. This game has been played, essentially the same way, since the industrial Revolution. through world wars. through political upheavals. through communal unrest, and times of economic boom and dark depression. It has served as both a focal point and a distraction for numerous generations. It's been a touchstone of American history, both reflecting and deflecting the stresses and influences at work face the ballpark.

And it's not just an American phenomenon. It's nearly impossible to find a town of more than a few hundred population everywhere on the planet that doesn't consist of a group of kids swinging a stick at a ball, many with dreams of one day knocking a walk-off homerun out of the park in the lowest of the 9th inning of a World Series game 7. (Hey, I still have that dream too!)

"The other sports are just sports. Baseball is a love." ~Bryant Gumbel

Baseball has it's losers and champions, heroes and goats, its integrity and, yes, its scandals. Like the men who play the game, baseball itself isn't perfect. But somehow, in some mysterious way, baseball inspires, enthralls, and entertains like no other sport.

As for me, I'm grateful dad took me to that first game. I'm happy to have baseball as a part of my life and education. And I've learned more than a few things from baseball over the years. From Babe Ruth, I've learned that the mystique of history can endure into the postmodern age. From Jackie Robinson I've learned that the power of a man's spirit and skill can overwhelm the bitterness of prejudice. From Lou Gehrig I learned that we are all ultimately mortal, and yet all capable of performing superhuman feats. From Derek Jeter I learned that you don't have to be a jerk to win: it's inherent to follow with both style and grace. From Cal Ripkin Jr. Who played a improbable narrative 2,131 consecutive games, I learned the value of resilience, determination, and guts. From Bill Buckner I learned that major league mistakes don't turn the fact that life goes on. From Yogi Berra I learned that "Baseball is ninety percent mental, the other half is physical." The list goes on.

A few years ago, my dad and I took my son to his first Portland Beavers baseball game. I don't remember much about the game. I don't recall the opposing team. I don't even recall whether our beloved Beavers won or lost. What I do recall is a great feeling of satisfaction, that I was now able to do what dad had done for me by introducing him to this strange and astonishing world of strikes, steals, and sliders.

Little had changed since my first game. The smell of beer and hotdogs still permeated the air. The field was just as green, the fans just as boisterous, the crack of the bat just as sharp. And, sometime nearby the 6th inning, sitting there in the stands with my father and son, I recall the confident and irreplaceable feeling of being at home.

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again." --- James Earl Jones (as Terrence Mann) in Field of Dreams
