Bellowing of predictions of the outcome of games by sports players is nothing new. Most pre-game bantering is soon forgotten, but some bold predictions, such as Broadway Joe's prediction of the Ny Jets winning the Super Bowl, live forever because they were part of a history changing story.

The great Babe Ruth calling his "Shot," pointing to where he'd hit a home run and unmistakably performing the, seemingly impossible feat, will be enshrined in baseball history.

These types of, what I call, acts of Showmanship, are good for sports, retention it alive and fresh, moderately prodding fans into excitement and continued interest. It's similar to the friendly wager of a coffee or soda made at the water cooler, just sufficient to add a bit of spice to the results, but not harming whatever or anybody.

One must remember the "Old Timers" shall we say, always restricted their taunts to a tempered "respect," at least publicly. Statements such as "They're a great team, but they've met their match in us," blended a respect for the opponent along with a challenge. This newspaper headline may cause an opponent to raise an eyebrow, but not infuriate him.

Things have moderately changed in sports, which I suppose should be thinkable, as the world now easily accepts manners and actions which were once whether frowned upon or not tolerated at all, but shouldn't some things in life be unchangeable?

A great many pro athletes of today, although highly talented as a player, tarnishes the Sport with their "thug like" attitude and large always running mouth, which has loss total experience with the brain.

Player's have openly stated for reporters, tweeted or whatever other communication avenue they choose, that they unmistakably "Hate" another team or player. Instead of inferring an insult, such as "He's not the best pitcher on the team" some players will say "He's lousy, I don't know how he got to the big leagues?"

In defense of the offending players, and they know who they are, let's assume the position that these are pre-arranged statements and tweets, or whatever, and the insulted man is part of the sideshow. Do the fans realize this slight charade? Evidently not as a Sf Giant fan, at the time of this article, lays in a coma, the effect of a beating inflicted by La Dodger baseball fans.

All unmistakably great competitive feuds, such as the Yankees and Red Sox, Cardinals and Cubs or Bears and Packers were born from a fierce history of competition between two extraordinarily talented teams pitted against one another, Not Trash Talk.

These players did their talking and a whole lot of it, but it was between the White Lines, as it should be. Let your talent do your talking.

The day of trash talking should immediately end, before it trickles down to the college, high school and ultimately slight league. Youngsters will try to emulate their baseball hero and if he trash talks, well....that's what the youngster will do.

Harmful Trash talk should no more be tolerated from Pro Ball players than smoking on the field. Neither are good for the players, fans or the sport. At least that's my humble opinion.

If "the spread" shows a half point (like 3.5), it means the "push" is not a feasible outcome.

The "line" on any team is the number to bet in terms of 0. If the favorite is at "-110" (the approved line), it means that a bet of 0 will win 0 if it wins (plus the number of the bet). If the dog is at +100 (also fairly standard), it means that a bet of 0 will win 0 (plus the number of the bet). Debating Sports, Who Is Right, and Who Is Wrong?

It has been some time since I have had a deliberate upon with another sports enthusiast like myself, and came out at the end with a new outlook or perspective on the topic at hand. I have held discussions, debates, arguments, analysis, deliberation, conversations, or whatever you would like to call it with countless people. I have talked about sports with my best friends, house members, and strangers alike. We have discussed everything from the game of basketball, to the draft choices in the upcoming Nfl Draft, all the way to what matters more to athletes; personal accolades or championships. And the only consensus that I have come to in over a decade of sports connected deliberate upon is that no one is right, and no one is wrong.

It seems relatively simple, "you're not right, but you're not wrong", doesn't it? However, it is not as universally understanding that way as it should be.

Baseball

For example, I personally believe that championships are what matter most to athletes, no matter what the sport; basketball, football, baseball, track & field, speed skating, and even curling. I do not believe it matters the level of competition either it be professional basketball in the Nba or a state high school basketball tournament. It could be an amateur speed skating competition in Salt Lake City, or the Olympic Games in Vancouver. Wherever the competition is held and no matter the level of opposition, every athlete strives to be the best. The only way to prove you are in fact the best is to be the last one/team standing. That is why you see so many athletes towards the latter half of their respective careers looking for the elusive "ring" or "title". We see it all of the time; Karl Malone going to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2003-2004 season in an attempt to win a title, something he never terminated in his career. He lost in the 2004 Finals to the Detroit Pistons, and consequently retired. This was an athlete who had nothing left to prove; he is first in all-time defensive rebounds, second on the all-time scoring list behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, recorded a description eleven consecutive seasons in which he scored at least 2,000 points, and was named to 14 Nba All-Star games. He won the Nba Most vital Player Award in 1997 and 1999, but none of that means whatever until you win that "ring". He retired following the 2003-2004 season without ever winning an Nba Championship Title. Not having an Nba Championship is a tasteless asterisk next to many Nba Hall of Famers, and it is something I believe separates the "greats" from the "elite". My roommate and good friend would disagree with my feelings towards athletes and their motivations. He declares for example that even though LeBron James has never won a championship title he is still the best player on the Miami Heat, where as I respectively disagree. I would argue that title should be left to his teammate Dwayne Wade, who won an Nba Championship back in 2006. I base this not purely on skill set, because if we were debating such I would agree with my roommate, instead who has gone out and proven they are in fact the best. Has LeBron James won consecutive Nba Most vital Player Awards, yes, has he been named to seven All-Star games in just eight seasons, yes, but he has never won an Nba Championship. At what point do personal accolades take president to the ultimate goal of becoming a champion?

The point I am attempting to make is that I am not right, but I am also not wrong. Personal understanding and determination is something that I believe makes sports so interesting. The athletics involved are obviously the focal point, as they should be, but the intangible factors deserve as much recognition as whatever else.

For example, me being from Chicago, I am a die-hard Chicago Bears fan and consequently hate our biggest rival, the Green Bay Packers. I have never had any more reason to hate the Packers other than the fact they are our biggest and oldest of rivals, dating back to when they first met back in 1921. But it is relationships such as that that generate some of the excitement of the game.

Another tasteless incompatibility among sports fans lies in personal bias. I have met countless habitancy who have it ingrained in their minds that a determined athlete is this talented, or a team is that overwhelming that they do not even give themselves a opening to make an honest and intriguing understanding or decision on the topic. They use their personal opinions on an athlete or team as "fact" rather than using actual/factual data or determination to base their judgment. The main point is that though you may have an understanding on a topic, either it be who deserves the Nba's Most vital Player Award or if you were starting an Nfl team tomorrow who would be your first pick, the sass is going to be your own. It will be based on your standards, your preferences, and your template. Therefore it is your answer, and your alone, it is not your job to try and influence whatever else into believing you are right and they are wrong. Many golfers, especially amateurs, believe that being able to consistently hit a ball in the same way is impossible.
